Upon public ground I bad firmness to contemplate our great and, I fear, irreparable loss; but as the object of my private esteem, affection, and confidential attachment, I am either too little or too much a man to reconcile myself as yet to the idea of being deprived of him for ever. The consequences of this fatal blow, I will own, are more affecting than I could have imagined; and though it is impossible for me to be jealous of your glory, I must lament the opportunity you have had of adding to it, by the manly, just, and disinterested resolution you adopted in the instant of calamity.
